An incredible and rare set of four solid Jacaranda armchairs, made in Brazil and designed by Jean Gillon in the 1960s. The wood and leather strapping on the chairs are in excellent condition and the removable cushions have been recently reupholstered in a tan leather. Gillon was Rumanian by birth and moved to Brazil in 1956, where he quickly worked to solidify his reputation of one of Brazil's top furniture designers. Jacaranda is more commonly known as Brazilian rosewood, which has been banned from commercial use and harvest since 1992 in order to help protect the biodiversity of the amazon jungle. This set of chairs is constructed from solid Jacaranda and have never been refinished, so the beauty and natural luminosity of the wood has been retained. The carving, styling and modernist angles of these chairs place this set squarely in the center of Brazil's highly influential modernist movement of the 1960's.
